Running generators in parallel. - A parallelconnected group of direct-current generators G1 - - G3 driven at definitely related speeds, e.g. mounted upon a common shaft or driven by synchronous motors from a common supply, and having decompounding windings DS1 - - DS3 to ensure proper load sharing, is arranged to yield a load characteristic as in Fig. 2 by giving each machine a compounding winding F1 - - F3 energized from a common exciter E which is overcompounded by a winding CS carrying the whole or a part of the output of the group. By arranging the exciting circuit of this machine to reach saturation at the full output of the group the decompounding windings cause a fall of voltage on overload and a limitation of current on short-circuit. The compounding effect of the coil CS may be varied to vary the load characteristic.
