Pole-pieces.-In a development of the invention described in Specification 293,508, the field poles are not divided, but are so arranged that the air gap under the leading tip is greater than that under the trailing tip so that under short-circuit conditions the cross flux due to armature reaction will saturate the armature teeth under a part of each pole and thereby reduce the total flux passing through the armature from pole to pole to an amount which is just sufficient to keep the short-circuit current circulating in the armature winding. In one arrangement, Fig. 1, a pole of normal shape is tilted, and the trailing tip is cut away to leave a surface T, M parallel with the armature. Fig. 2 shows a modification in which part of the leading tip L, M is set back parallel to the armature. The part T of the pole may have a restricted cross section to increase the reluctance. Interpoles may be used for improving commutation, for varying the characteristic or for stabilizing the machine as described in Specification 293,508.
