Abstract
263,276. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., Pollock, A. A., and Orchard, H. Nov. 20, 1925. Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power. -In electric ship propulsion a combined alternating and direct current drive is arranged so that at low speeds and for reversing only the direct current drive is employed and at high speeds both transmissions are used. The port propeller shaft has a direct current motor DM1 and two alternating current motors AM3, AM5 which are connected to generators DG1, AG3, AG5 driven by Diesel engines 1, 3, 5 respectively. An auxiliary direct current generator D1 is fitted to the shaft of the engine 1, but may be driven by a separate engine. The starboard installation is similar to that on the port side. For slow speeds and reversing, engine 1, generator DG1 and motor DM1 are employed, controls being effected on the Ward-Leonard system. For higher speeds, engines 3 and 5 are opened up. When manoeuvring, the engines 3, 5 are not shut down but the excitation of the alternators AG3, AG5 is taken off. Specification 263,261 is referred to.
