Abstract

219,679. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Macmillan, C.). July 26, 1923, [Convention date]. Alternating-current motors. - In an electric power-transmission system for propelling ships, an induction motor with a doubly-wound rotor is provided with switches fitted within the rotor structure for the purpose of bringing the low-resistance winding into use when a required speed is attained. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1. a turbine-driven generator 1 feeds the motor stator 4. A high-resistance squirrel-cage winding 10 produces the starting torque and a low-resistance winding 11 is brought into use by the closure of electromagnetic switches 12. The switches are mounted on the rotor frame as shown in Fig. 2, and if necessary are counterbalanced against inertia effects.
