Abstract

291,122. Bentley, J. Sept. 17, 1927. Systems for transmitting mechanical power.- To vary the speed and torque of an electric motor automatically according to variations of resisting torque, the driving shaft a, Fig. 1, is coupled to the driven shaft through an epicyclic gear having an outer reaction member c which carries a dynamo-electric generator electrically connected to the motor so that the generated voltage always acts to retard the drive. The dynamo-electric generator may, as shown, consist of a solid or laminated iron armature g revolving under salient poles h of a stationary yoke. When the driving power is taken from a direct-current electric motor, the motor j, Fig. 3, may be electrically connected to brushes of the braking dynamo l so that increased speed of the dynamo reduces the effective voltage at the motor terminals. When a three-phase driving motor is employed, the dynamo has a three-phase rotor p, Fig. 4, connected through slip-rings to the rotor windings q of the motor, so as to increase the electrical slip of the motor with increasing speed of the dynamo.
