Abstract

1401461 Electro-mechanical power transmission systems KAWASAKI JUKOGYO KK 29 Sept 1972 [4 Oct 1971 24 Oct 1971] 45092/72 Heading H2H An arrangement for transmitting mechanical power from one or more prime movers to two loads comprises a device having two independently rotatable rotors and a stator, the stator and one of the rotors forming a dynamoelectric machine and the two rotors forming an electro-magnetic coupling, one of the rotors being mechanically coupled to both the prime mover and one of the loads and the other rotor being mechanically coupled to the other load, the stator and the rotors being provided with various windings certain of which are interconnected. Fig. 1 shows a schematic diagram of one embodiment of the invention and Fig. 10 a practical arrangement of the elements shown in Fig. 1. A rotor 2 and a rotor 1 form an electromagnetic coupling 32 and the rotor 1 and a stator 7 form a dynamo-electric machine 8 which in this embodiment functions as an alternating current generator. The rotor 1 is driven by a suitable prime mover 3 and is mechanically connected to a load 4 whilst the rotor 2 is mechanically connected to a load 5. the loads 4, 5 being the propellers of a ship and may rotate in the same direction or in opposite directions. Windings 9, 11 on the stator 7 and rotor 1 respectively form the windings of the generator 8 and windings 6, 12 on the rotors 1, 2 form those of the electro-magnetic coupling 32. Slip rings 14 are provided whereby windings 6, 9 may be connected together and slip rings 15, 16 are connected to winding 12. Thus the load 4 is driven directly by the prime mover 3 and the load 5 by way of the electromagnetic coupling 32. In a second embodiment the prime mover 3 is arranged to drive the rotor 2 and in this case the dynamo-electric machine 8 is in the form of an electric motor. In other embodiments two prime movers are provided the drives from which are combined either by gearing or electrically. Furthermore the connection between windings 6, 9 may include a cycloconverter and the machine 8 provided with a commutator to function as a D.C. motor.
