Abstract

143,181. Stephenson, L. J. May 15, 1919, [Convention date]. Systems for continuous-current motors only.- A dynamo-electric machine operating primarily as a motor, but adapted also to operate as a generator for regenerative braking, is provided with an auxiliary series field winding 40 and with a main shunt field winding 26 in series with the armature 18 of a regulating dynamo-electric machine, the field winding 28 of which is connected either in shunt or in series with the main field winding 26, a rheostat 31 being included in the field circuit of the regulating machine so that the main motor may be given the characteristic of a shunt motor or of a series motor. The main motor and the auxiliary machine may be connected together through variable speed gearing as described in Specification 128,556, [Class 35, Dynamo-electric generators &c.], by means of which the motor may be given a characteristic corresponding to that of a compound wound motor. The rheostat 31 may be connected in series or in parallel with the field winding 28. The voltage of the regulating machine normally opposes the voltage impressed on the field winding 26, but an additional field winding 50 acting in opposition to the field winding 28 may be provided on the regulating machine, by which the polarity of the regulating machine may be reversed. In a modification, the current in the field winding 28, Fig. 5, is reversed so as to reverse the polarity of the regulating machine 18. The main motor may be provided with a commutating field pole winding in series with the armature 15. Specification 135,861 also is referred to.
