Abstract

14,396. Haworth, H. F., and Thomas Transmission, Ltd. June 20. Systems depending on the use of two or more machines; equalizing load on generator.-Two series-wound machines 1, 2 are driven from the same source, and the armature 1, connected in series with the fields 3, 4 of both machines, is connected to the external supply mains in parallel with the armature 2. The machine 1 generates a higher voltage than the machine 2, and when there is no external load, a current circulates in the circuit formed by the two machines. The machine 2 runs as a motor and returns energy to the shaft 5. As the external load comes on, the current through the machine 2 diminishes and reverses, whereupon the two machines begin to share the load. The current circulating at no load may be varied by a diverter rheostat across one or both fields 3, 4, or by a battery across the field 3. The machine 1 may be replaced by a group of machines connected in series or parallel, and the machine 2 by another group. Series motors on a tramcar &c. may be connected in the same way for regenerative braking.
