Abstract

7252. Thomas, J. G. P., and Thomas Transmission, Ltd. March 26. Exciting.-The armature 1, Fig. 1, of a variable-speed dynamo is connected in series with a steadying resistance 8 across the battery 3 being charged, and its field-magnet winding 4 is connected in series with the field-magnet winding 5 and armature 2 of a regulating- machine, the electro-motive force of which opposes, but is less in magnitude than, the electro-motive force of the main generator. The field-magnet windings are of very low resistance. The regulating-machine may be identical with the main generator and may be driven directly or by gearing from the generator shaft, its field-magnet winding 5 then being shunted by a resistance 6 with or without a resistance 7. A resistance 9 may be connected in shunt across the machine 2, 5. The machine 2 may be used as a motor to start up the prime mover. A single machine, which is stated to work on the same principle, is shown in Fig. 2, the fieldmagnet winding 13 being connected between the left-hand brush 10 and one or more adjacent auxiliary brushes 14, 15. The main brushes 10 are connected directly across the battery 12. To start up the prime mover, the battery is connected to the auxiliary brushes 14, 15 and to the right-hand brush 10. According to the Provisional Specification, the two machines shown in Fig. 1 may be combined to form one machine with two distinct armature windings and commutators, the motor or booster element having fewer armature conductors than the generator element.
