Abstract

7436. Davidson, W. N. L. April 8. Locomotive vehicles.-Self-driving electric apparatus for propelling vehicles and for other purposes comprises a motor and a dynamo driven thereby, both of which may be provided with sliding armatures for regulation, and an accumulator may be connected both to the motor and to the dynamo so as to drive the motor and at the same time be charged by the dynamo. The dynamo is brought up to speed by an external mechanism, which is subsequently cut off. By this arrangement of the armatures and fields, it is stated, the current generated will drive the motor, which in turn will mechanically drive the dynamo. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the armature a of the motor A is connected through gear-wheels to the armature c of the dynamo C, or the two armatures may be upon the same shaft. The accumulators D are connected with both motor and dynamo by means of the leads d, d' through the necessary switches. Two sets of accumulators D', D' may be used, one driving the motor while the other is being charged by the dynamo driven by the motor. In this arrangement, the armatures a, c may be actuated by mechanical means so that one armature is partly drawn out of the field while the other is pushed within, enabling the machines to serve alternately as motor and dynamo and to increase or decrease the currents through the armatures. The shaft of the dynamo may be provided with a belt-driven pulley whereby the machines may be caused to rotate by an external agency, and the dynamo and motor may be connected by a clutch or by a variable gear. In vehicles, the road wheels may be used to drive the dynamo. Once the dynamo is at full speed, the external power may be taken off, when, it is stated, the dynamo will drive the motor and the motor the dynamo, while part of the current generated by the dynamo can be used externally. A number of motors and dynamos may be employed in combination in this way.
