Abstract
3281. Pieper, H. Feb. 20, 1911, [Convention date]. Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power; equalizing load on prime mover. -In a petrol electric power-transmission system for vehicles, two dynamo-electric machines are mounted on the engine shaft. One machine is connected across a battery, and is adapted to run as a. generator to charge the battery, or as a motor to start or assist the engine, while the other machine normally runs as a generator to drive the propelling-motors, or as a motor driven from these motors when running regeneratively. Switches are provided by means of which the two dynamo-electric machines may be connected in series and their voltages reversed and varied to control the propelling- motors, or by which the machine connected to the propelling-motors may be replaced by the machine connected to the battery when the voltages of the two machines are equal. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, machines 2, 3 are mounted on the shaft of the engine 1, and in the position shown of the switch 17, the battery 5 and machine 2 are in one circuit; while the propelling-motor 4 and machine 3 are in a separate circuit. The field windings 11, 12, 13 of the machines 2, 3, 4 are variably excited from the battery 5, and a reversing switch 7 is placed in the circuit of the winding 12. To start the engine, the machine 2 is run as a motor, after which it runs as a generator or motor according to the load conditions. The machine 3 normally runs as a generator supplying current to the motor 4, the speed and direction of which is controlled by means of the regulating-switches 6, 9 and the reversing-switch 7. The machine 4 is also adapted to run as a generator driving the machine 3 as a motor and the machine 2 as a generator to charge the battery 5. When the switch 17 is moved into the position shown in dotted lines, the machines 2, 3 running as generators are connected in series across the motor 4, and the speed of the latter is controlled by placing the generators in opposition, reducing the voltage of the generator 3, and finally reversing and increasing the voltage of this generator by means of the switches 7, 9. In this arrangement, a switch is placed in the armature circuit of the motor 4, and a reversing switch in its field circuit. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, two interconnected switches 14, 15 are arranged so that, when the switch 15 is closed, the switch 14 is open, and vice versa. In this arrangement, when the voltage of the machine 3 is equal to that of the machine 2, the former is replaced by the latter by closing the switch 14 and opening the switch 15. The switch 17, Fig. 1, and the switches 14, 15, Fig. 3, may be operated either by hand or automatically.
