Abstract

11,214. Fynn, V. A. May 13, 1912, [Convention date]. Dynamos, regulating; motors, controlling.-A dynamo - electric machine adapted to run as a motor for starting-up a gasolene engine, and afterwards as a generator driven by the engine for charging a battery, has two armature windings which are connected in parallel for motoring and in series for generating. Fig. 3 shows the connexions of the armature windings 2, 24 when the machine is operating as a motor, the winding 24 being connected in series with the shunt field winding 5, and the other shunt winding 6 being short-circuited through resistances 46, 47. When the engine is up to speed, the battery 14 is disconnected, the short - circuit opened, and the armature winding 24 momentarily short - circuited; the machine then operates as a generator with the armature windings in series. At a predetermined value of the voltage across the windings 24, 2, an electro-magnetic switch 8, 10, 11 operates to connect the. windings 24, 2 to the battery 14 through a series demagnetizing field winding 7. The shunt field windings 5, 6 are connected across the windings 24, 2 and the resistance 47 which has a positive temperature coefficient. A similar resistance 46 is connected in the shunt field circuit. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) describes also an enginestarting and battery-charging system in which a single armature winding is used in conjunction with two shunt field windings, one of low resistance and the other of high resistance, and a series demagnetizing field winding. The machine is operated as a motor with the low resistance shunt field winding in circuit and as a generator with all the field windings in circuit. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
