Abstract

Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power. - Two armatures d, e, Figs. 2 and 5, are capable of independent rotation within a single stationary field-magnet structure f having divided poles, the field strengths of which can be varied separately. The armature d is mounted on the shaft g of the gas &c. engine, while the armature e is connected to the driven shaft b. In normal running, the armature d with the adjacent portion of the field magnet acts as a generator which supplies current to the armature e, the last-named acting as a motor driving the load. The controller connexions are shown in Fig. 5. To start the engine, the arm i is moved on to the contacts k, whereby the armature d is driven as a motor by the battery h. The arm i is next moved upon the contacts l, when the generator and motor elements are connected together. Further movement of the arm causes resistance m to be cut out of the motor-armature circuit, and resistance n to be cut into the motor field-magnet circuit. To reverse the motor, the switch o is moved to the dotted-line position and the arm i is moved on to the contacts p, the battery being then connected to the motor armature. At the highest speeds, the armature d, e and shafts g, b may be coupled directly through a clutch. Alternating-current machines may be employed.
