Abstract
6891. Rosenberg, E. March 20. Systems for conversion, employing rotary converters.-For starting-up a rotary converter or other synchronous machine, a separate starting- motor of the self-starting synchronous type is provided. A motor of this type, when connected to an alternating-current circuit, starts like an induction motor, owing to the eddy currents induced in the pole-faces &c., and on approaching synchronous speed automatically pulls into synchronism due to the presence of salient poles or of poles defined by means of an exciting-winding. Fig. 1 shows a starting-motor G coupled to the shaft of the main synchronous machine B, and, at starting, adapted for connexion to the line D through the switch L, the switch C then being open. The rotor F of the starting-motor is unwound, while the field magnet A of the main machine is angularly displaced in a forward direction with reference to the rotor F through a determined angle alpha so that the switch C may be closed without causing any disturbance in the line. The field-magnet of the starting-motor may carry an exciting winding fed with direct current from the commutator brushes of the rotary converter, in order to control the polarity of the latter. The rotor of the starting-motor may be built up of laminations and may be provided with a squirrelcage or a winding connected to slip-rings for starting-up. Specification 9644/12 is referred to.
