Abstract

Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power.-A variable-speed power-transmission system comprises two dynamo - electric machines, an epicyclic gear, brush-shifting gear for one of the dynamo-electric machines, and a reversing-switch adapted to be operated by a handle or pedal which operates the brush-shifting gear. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the engine is coupled to a shaft 1 carrying the armature 2 of a dynamo-electric machine and the bevel-wheel 3 of an epicyclic gear. A hollow shaft 5 carries the armature 6 of a second dynamo-electric machine arid a bevel-wheel 4 of the epicyclic gear; and the driven shaft 9 is keyed to a support 8 carrying the satellitewheels 7 of the gear. The brushes 14 of the armature 2 are adapted to be rotated, and are connected to segmental conducting - strips 16, which maintain the connexions between the armature and the external circuit by contacting with brushes 17, Fig. 2. A switch 20 is provided to reverse the direction of the current through armature 6. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the brush - shifting arrangement and reversing-switch are combined, and in the position shown, the rotation of the shaft 9 is stopped by short-circuiting the field-windings 18, 19 by means of the brushes 26, 28 and a contact segment 23. For high speeds, a supplementary brush 29 is provided which introduces a second field winding 30 when the voltage of the armature 2 is zero. The field magnets 10, 11 of the dynamo-electric machines are made in two parts, and are mounted in a frame 12 which also carries the gear case 13.
