In cranes or hoists driven by three-phase motors, braking is provided by a coupled direct-current generator, the field strength of which is controlled by an auxiliary dynamo-electric machine coupled to a flywheel, so as to increase steadily from zero to its full value. Field and armature resistances for the generator may be controlled in accordance with speed.
