Abstract

873,050. Control of D.C. motors. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd., and STEELS ENGINEERING PRODUCTS Ltd. Oct. 2, 1959 [Oct. 15, 1958], No. 32938/58. Class 38 (3). A hoist motor M, having a series field winding FS and an aiding separately-excited field winding FSH, is adapted to be supplied from a generator G which is driven by a variable-speed prime mover. During lowering operation, the motor acts as a generator and its armature is shunted by resistor RL, a rectifier RE being connected across the series winding FS to bypass reverse current. This prevents the winding FS from opposing the winding FSH if the generator voltage exceeds the motor voltage. For hoisting operation, the connections of the armature and series field windings of the motor are changed, the flux directions in the windings FS, FSH, remaining the same as for lowering operation. Speed control of the motor is effected by throttle control of the prime mover during both hoisting and lowering operations. During lowering, the motor is readily transferred between dynamic braking and motoring operation. In a modification, the same field winding may be connected in series with the armature, or to an external source, for hoisting and lowering operation, respectively, Figs. 1a, 1b (not shown).
