Abstract

233,051. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Jewitt, D. E. Feb. 2, 1924. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- Electric propulsion apparatus for twin screw ships comprises a polyphase alternator which supplies power to two induction motors coupled one to each propeller shaft, and each induction motor is connected in cascade with a direct current excited synchronous motor coupled to the propeller shaft associated with the other induction motor, whereby the propeller speeds are automatically regulated to give an equal division of power between the two propellers. The threephase alternator 1 is excited from a direct current supply 2 and gives power to two three-phase induction motors 3, 4 driving propeller shafts 5, 6 either directly or through reduction gearing. Two three-phase synchronous motors 7, 8 are also coupled to the shafts 5, 6, and a cascade connection between the primary motors 3, 4 and secondary motors 8, 7 respectively is made as indicated. The secondary motors may be cut out when independent control of the propellers is required.
