Abstract
607,970. Starting prime movers. TRIGGS, W. W. (Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, & Cie.). Nov. 16, 1945, No. 30770. Addition to 592,639, [Group XXXIII]. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Nov. 26, 1946.] [Class 38 (iv)] A gas turbine ship propulsion plant is started by a dynamo-electric machine 10, Fig. 1, which receives power from one or more dieselelectric sets 11, 12, and drives the turbine up to about one-third normal speed, the machine subsequently being driven as a generator by the turbine and assisting or replacing the sets 11, 12 in the supply of power to the auxiliary mains 17. The ratio of the gearing between the machine 10 and the turbine remains constant. For starting purposes, machine 10 may operate with a series field winding, this being replaced, when the machine is to generate, by a shunt winding providing the weaker excitation required on account of the higher speed of the machine. An automatic voltage regulator 20 may also be provided. The machine 10 may be in Ward-Leonard connection with one of the sets 11, 12 during starting. When the auxiliary services are operated by three-phase alternating current, the propulsion plant is started by a pole-changing synchronous asynchronous machine 22, Fig. 2, which is run up as an induction motor from the auxiliary supply mains 21 on a low pole number by starter 25. Alternatively, one of the auxiliary diesel sets 23, 24 operating with gradually increasing voltage may start the machine 22. When the turbine is self-running, the pole number of machine 22 is increased and D.C. excitation applied by machine 27 so that machine 22 may supply the auxiliary mains 21.
