329,970. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., Jaffrey, J. A., and Pollock, A. A. Feb. 27, 1929. Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power; electromechanical power transmission systems.-In ship propulsion plant comprising a main engine and an exhaust steam turbine coupled to a direct current generator supplying current to a motor mounted on the propeller shaft to assist the main engine, the motor is arranged to change over to a generating condition on a rapid increase in speed of the shaft. An exhaust steam turbine is coupled direct or through gearing to a direct current generator 1 which supplies current to a main motor 2 on the propeller shaft. The motor has a shunt field 3 excited by a selfexcited mechanically coupled exciter 4 and a differential shunt field 5 excited by an exciter 6 directly coupled to the generator shaft. The generator has a shunt field 7 excited by a direct coupled exciter 6 and differential shunt field 8 excited by the exciter 4 mechanically coupled to the motor shaft. A separate flywheel may be mounted on shaft of the exhaust turbine within its casing.
