Abstract
186,332. Kõgi, E. Sept. 21, 1921, [Convention date]. Momentum power-storing apparatus. - In steam power plant of the type in which the exhaust steam is used for heating &c. purposes while the engine itself performs mechanical work, the engine supplying exhaust steam is provided with a fly-wheel rotating at a variable speed and designed to absorb the engine power in excess of that required for the power shaft when there is a large demand for exhaust steam so that this power may be added to the power developed by the engine when there is a smaller demand for exhaust steam and more demand for mechanical power. Fig. 1 shows the engine a coupled up to a mechanical power shaft d and to a fly-wheel e through variable belt gearing. When the demand for power falls or the power developed by the engine rises, the whole system is accelerated at first. A governor i thereupon moves the belt g so that the fly-wheel is further accelerated and stores up momentum which it gives up to the system when the demand for power rises. In another arrangement, the fly-wheel e is - interposed between the engine and the power shaft. If desired, the engine may be coupled with a fixed transmission ratio to the fly-wheel and a continuous current generator, the voltage of the latter being maintained constant by means of an automatic voltage regulator of known type.
