368,354. Dynamo-electric machines aiding or replacing prime movers. ARMSTRONG, WHITWORTH, & CO. (ENGINEERS), Ltd., SIR W. G., Scotswood Works, Newcastle-on-Tyne, IONIDES, P. D., Sproughton, Courtenay Avenue, London, and BECKETT, C. M., 55, Wordsworth Drive, Cheam, Surrey. Sept. 5, 1930, No. 26514. [Class 38 (iv).] Comprises a power plant in which various auxiliary machines are arranged in driving relationship with a dynamo-electric machine, capable of operating as a generator or motor and coupled to a prime-mover through a unidirectional clutch. When the prime-mover is running it drives the auxiliary machines and the dynamo-electric machine as to charge a generator battery. When the dynamo-electric machine is not being driven by the primemover, it runs as a motor from the battery to drive the auxiliary machines. A generator C, Fig. 2, and other auxiliary machines E, F, G are driven from a prime-mover through a unidirectional clutch B. The generator C is connected to a battery H, Fig. 4, through a starter J and has a shunt field C<1> in series with resistances K<1>, K<2> which are normally short-circuited by relays L<1>, L<2>. The primemover has two running speeds and the relays L<1> L<2> are connected with the speed control so that the field is regulated in accordance with engine speed. When the engine is running at low speed both resistances are shorted and battery charging occurs. At full speed relay Ll is open so that increase in speed is balanced by decrease in field and charging occurs. When both relays are open the generator runs as a motor from the battery at a speed above engine speed, and so relieves the primemover of the auxiliary load. When the prime-mover is not running the generator C can be run as a motor to drive the auxiliaries. The dynamo-electric machine has in addition to the shunt field coils, series coils to strengthen its field where the machine is acting as a generator and also maintain the speed at a value near the no-load speed when it is acting as a motor.
