Abstract

482,283. Pumps. HILLMAN, M., and HILLMAN, L. C., [Representatives of HILLMAN, E. C.]. Sept. 22, 1936, No. 25759. [Class 7 (ii)] In a charging arrangement the output of the blower is proportionate to the load on the engine throughout a predetermined load range, but is cut off below said load range. A. Diesel engine 1 drives an electric generator 2 which supplies current to a motor 3 driving a blower 4, preferably of the Roots' type. The speed of the motor is controlled by a rheostat 10 the arm 7 of which is moved in accordance with the load on the engine. When this load falls below a predetermined minimum, contacts 11 are closed, and either, a relay 13 opens a vent-valve 14 in the delivery pipe 6 of the blower, or a relay 15 opens the motor circuit. The arm 7 is preferably moved by the engine governor, and, in a modification, it may operate a change-speed gear, e.g. of the type known as the Hayes self-selector transmission gear, or a hydraulic coupling of the type described in Specification 457,746, which may be directly driven by the engine.
