Abstract

403,137. Speed governors ; motor power plant. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and MORRIS, P. D., Tarnside, Bilton Road, Rugby. June 28, 1932, No. 18268. [Classes 57 and 110 (iii).] A plant suitable for ship propulsion comprises a reciprocating steam engine 36 exhausting to a turbine 1 driving an alternating generator, coupled to a motor assisting propulsion, and also a direct current generator for auxiliary purposes. A speed governor 5 coupled to the turbine actuates a control valve 35 controlling hydraulic motors 11, 18 actuating a valve 16 admitting H.P. steam and a valve 17 admitting L.P. steam. If the speed falls below a minimum, the valve 16 is actuated to admit H.P. steam. If the speed rises above a maximum, the valve 17 is actuated to reduce the L.P. steam and at the same time allow some to be by-passed to the condenser 37.
