Abstract
404,420. Electric ship propulsion plant. JOHNSON, E. M., 33, Poplar Grove, Brooklands, Cheshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Oct. 15, 1932, No. 28850. [Class 110 (iii).] In electric ship propulsion plant wherein a steam turbine drives an alternating current generator feeding an alternating current motor on the propeller shaft, the field windings are excitedwithdirect current from one or more generating sets each set comprising generators driven by a back-pressure steam turbine which exhausts either into the main steam turbine or into the condenser or to the atmosphere according to the load on the main turbine. The main turbine 1 is supplied with steam through an emergency valve 3 and governor valve 4 and exhausts into a condenser 5. A back-pressure turbine 6 drives a direct current generator and is under the control of a governor valve 8 from the pipe junction 12 in the main steam supply between the emergency valve 3 and the governor 4. The exhaust from the turbine 6 is controlled by a two-way valve 9 and can be led to a point in the supply to the turbine 1 or passed through the pipe 11 to the condenser. The two-way valve 9 is connected with the control gear of the turbine 1 or of the generator driven thereby so that when the load on the turbine or the speed thereof is above a predetermined value, the valve 9 is moved to open the pipe 10, when steam passes from the turbine 6 to the supply to the turbine 1. If the main turbine 1 is shut down by closure of the valve 3, the steam supply to the back-pressure turbine 6 is also cut off. If the supply to the turbine 6 is from a separate source, the emergency valve of the turbine 1 and the two-way valve 9 are interconnected so that on closure of the emergency valve the diverter valve 9 will be set to pass the turbine 6 exhaust to the condenser. The connections between the control valves may be by mechanical linkages or gearing or by electric or hydraulic transmission apparatus.
