Abstract
366,067. Systems for transmitting mechanical power. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and COATES, H. J., of General Electric Co., Engineering Works, Witton, Birmingham. Oct. 21, 1930, No. 31540. [Class 38 (iv).] In a ship propulsion system where overloading of alternating current generators or motors may occur under certain running conditions the output of the generators is automatically limited at any speed or over a range of speeds when the maximum power of the generator or generators in use is greater than that of the motor or motors in operation. The output limiting means restricts the supply of motive fluid to the prime movers. Means may be provided whereby both output and speed of the generators may be reduced. Auxiliary switches 1 .. 4 each associated with a switch controlling the motor connections of a motor and closed only when the motor is inoperative and auxiliary switches 5, 6 each associated with a generator and only when the generator is inoperative and connected in parallel with each other. These auxiliary switches are in series with electrically operated devices 10, 21 controlling the governor setting of the respective prime movers and, through auxiliary switches 11, 12 each associated with a generator and closed only when the generator is operative, also in series with electrically operated devices 13, 14 controlling the throttle valves of the respective prime movers. Thus with one generator or one motor inoperative the speeds of both generators are limited and when both generators are operative but not all the motors the output is limited at all speeds of the generator. Specification 352,615 is referred to.
