Abstract

367,455. Supply systems. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C., 65, Chancery Lane, London.-(Atlantic Refining Co. ; 260, South Broad Street, Philadelphia, U.S.A.) Nov. 22, 1930, No. 35257. [Class 38 (iv).] Substituting sources in service.-In a system, such as a ship propulsion system, having main and auxiliary generators driven by a common prime mover, such as a Diesel engine, and having a second auxiliary generator which may form part of a similar set, a load circuit which has to be continuously supplied is automatically transferred from one auxiliary generator to another if the voltage of the first falls below a given value when the second machine is generating an adequate voltage. The main generators B, B<1> of two Diesel sets may supply a motor driving the propeller, and of the auxiliary generators D, D<1> the first may supply the field circuits and the second an auxiliary circuit 7, 8, and, through switching means G, a circuit 9, 10 supplying essential services such as electrical steering gear, a gyro-compass, &c. The switching means G, Fig. 2, comprises electromagnetic switches j, k energized by the circuit 3, 4 and normally interconnecting this with the circuit 9, 10, a magnet m normally energized by the circuit 3, 4 to close the aforesaid energizing circuit at a contact p<2> and to hold open against spring pressure a contact p<1> in the energizing circuit of switches h, i. When the voltage on circuit 3, 4 fails the contact p<1> closes, whereupon the switches h, i interconnect circuits 9,. 10 and 1, 2 if the voltage on the latter circuit is sufficient.
