Abstract
209,111. Ingersoll, H.L. April 24, 1922, [Convention date]. Petrol-electric vehicles-Locomotives propelled by turbines transmitting power through electric generators and motors carry two or more turbinegenerator sets which are automatically started and stopped so as to vary the number of sets in use according to the load. In the apparatus shown in the Figure, two turbines 17<a>, 17<b> respectively driving electric generators 18a, 18<b> are started and stopped by valves 70 actuated by electromagnets which receive current from a branched electric circuit 76. Under normal load, only one of the turbine sets is working, and only one branch of the circuit is closed. In case of undue load on the set in use, a solenoid 101 closes both branches of the circuit 76, thereby bringing both turbines into use. An automatic distributing switch 90 changes the set in use each time that normal load is restored. Solenoid switches 42 effect the automatic cutting in and cutting out of the generators.
