Abstract

374,208. Ships' power plant. WALKER, G. W. HIGGS-, Whitehall, Kingswinford, near Dudley, Staffordshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. April 16, 1931, No. 11323. [Class 114.] In propelling plant for ships consisting of a reciprocating engine and exhaust turbine, the turbine is connected to the main shaft bv means of a magnetic friction clutch, actuated automatically in accordance with the respective speeds of the coacting members. Steam passes from the reciprocating engine 1, as shown in the Figure, either by way of a valve 18 and the turbine 3 or by byepass valve 17 direct, to the condenser 4. The drive is transmitted by double reduction gearing 6 .. 9 and clutch 10, 11 to a sleeve 12, connected by a flexible coupling 13 to the shaft 2. Two governors 19, 20, driven respectively by the clutch members 10, 11, actuate two switches in the excitation circuit of the clutch, so that the circuit is closed when the two members are rotating at appropriate speeds, preferably when the speed of the member 10 is lower than that of 11, to allow for the acceleration of the turbine during the time the field of the clutch is being established. The valves 17, 18 are interconnected to ensure that one only is open, and connected also to a switch in the circuit of the clutch 10, 11 so that when the valve 17 is opened the turbine is disconnected.
