Abstract

373,353. Propelling ships. CARR, L. H. A., Oakleigh, Cambridge Road, Hale, Cheshire, WALKER, G. W. HIGGS-, Whitehall, Kingswinford, near Dudley, Staffordshire, and ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. April 15, 1931, No. 11198. [Class 114.] In a plant comprising a reciprocating engine 1 which drives a propeller shaft 2 and an exhaust or mixed pressure turbine 3 driving a shaft 5 which is geared by double-reduction gearing 6 .. 9 to the shaft 2, an electromagnetic coupling 10, 11 connects the first and second stages of the gears. The gear wheel 9 is secured on a hollow shaft 12 and connected to the shaft 2 by means of a torsionally resilient coupling 13. Exhaust steam from the engine 1 passes either to the turbine 3 through a valve 18, or during reverse drive to a condenser 4 through a valve 17. These valves are interlocked so that valve 18 cannot be closed until valve 17 is open and vice versa. The member 10 of the coupling is wound with coils supplied with direct current controlled by a switch which is operated from the valve 17, so that the latter is opened before the current is cut off to disconnect the coupling. Member 11 of the coupling comprises a rotor wound with phase windings connected through slip rings to external variable resistances. The rotor may be of the squirrel cage type. Direct current may be supplied to the windings of the rotor 11 as soon as the speed of member 10 is nearly synchronous with that of 11. Valves 17, 18 are interlocked with the reversing gear of the engine 1.
