Abstract

367,626. Motor power plant. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.- (Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie ; Baden, Switzerland.) April 23, 1931, No. 12035. [Class 110 (iii).] A marine steam power plant comprises a reciprocating engine a and auxiliaries d the exhaust steam from both a and d being fed to a turbine c which through gearing h drives the propeller shaft b. Change-over valves e, g connect the engine or auxiliaries exhausts either to the turbine c or a condenser f. Steam from the intermediate cylinder of the engine is fed to a feed-water preheater v and passes on to the turbine. In place of the gearing h electrical transmission or hydraulic gearing may be used. The coupling i may be of any type. A pressure regulator u ensures approximately constant back pressure for the auxiliaries when they exhaust to the condenser. A live steam pipe k supplies the engine and a pipe l the auxiliaries. In an alternative arrangement the exhaust steam from the auxiliaries is led into the exhaust pipe from the engine a, so that the second change-over valve g is dispensed with. The change-over valves may be operated automatically. The turbine may also drive a dynamo for supplying current to the ship. The motor and dynamo in the case of electrical drive from turbine to the shaft b are disconnected electrically on diminution of engine speed. Live steam may be fed to the turbine through a pipe m. The turbine may have separate nozzles for the exhaust steam from the engine and the auxiliaries to provide for different steam pressures. The exhaust from the auxiliaries d may be led to the L.P. cylinder of the engine a.
