Abstract

743,037. Motor power plant. BAGGERUD, O. J. Aug. 27, 1953, No. 23646/53. Class 110(3) In a marine steam power plant comprising a reciprocating engine having low and high pressure stages and auxiliary equipment driven by boiler steam, a multi-stage or mixed pressure 'turbine is provided, with means 'for connecting the turbine directly to the boiler, the low pressure cylinder of the engine and excess auxiliary exhaust, so as to be capable of taking steam at three different points. In the marine power plant shown, steam from one or more boilers 1 is supplied through pipe 28 to a reciprocating engine 2 and through pipe 27 to auxiliaries 3. At full power, a mixed pressure turbine 12 re- 'ceives live steam at inlet 13 through pipe 29 and exhaust steam from the auxiliaries 3 and engine 2 at intermediate inlets 13a and 14 respectively. The turbine exhausts to a condenser 15. Valves 16, 21, 22 allow the exhaust from the engine 2 and auxiliaries 3 to be directed to the condenser 15 instead of to the turbine 12. Some cf the exhaust from the auxiliaries, 3 may be used, as shown, in a preheater H for the boiler feed water. The propeller shaft 5 is directly driven by the engine 2 through a coupling having two wedges 4 which can be removed to disconnect the drive. The shaft 5 is also driven by the turbine 12 through gearing 10, 7, 6 and a hydraulic coupling 9. At intermediate power, the supply of live steam to turbine 12 is cut off. At low power and for manoeuvring, the turbine 12 is disconnected from the shaft 5 by emptying the coupling 9 and may be kept running so as to continue driving a generator 25; additionally, when the vessel is in port, the engine 2 is shut down. In the embodiment shown, the turbine inlet 13 and the engine 2 are supplied with superheated steam and the auxiliaries 3 are supplied with unsuperheated steam. In a modification, the engine 2 is supplied through a mixing valve with a mixture of superheated and unsuperheated steam. In a further modification, the superheater has a high temperature section which supplies the turbine inlet 13 and a medium temperature section which supplies the engine 2.
