Abstract

571,451. Steam turbines. FIELD, J. F. Nov. 19, 1943, No. 19411. [Classes 110 (i) and 110 (iii)] Steam is supplied at high temperature from a pipe 10 to a superheater 2 where the temperature is raised as high as the materials of construction of superheater and turbine or engine will permit. In the initial stages, steam passes through a turbine wheel, back to the superheater, through the second turbine wheel and so on to the stage A, where the steam flows through 'the remaining turbine stages to 'a condenser- 9. The condensed steam is pumped by a pump 12 through a feedheating system 11, which is heated by steam bled from-the turbine through pipes B, compressed adiabatically and cooled step by step before being added to the main returning flow of feed water or steam in such a way that the temperature difference between the compressed steam and the returning feed water or feed steam, is of small order. Air for combustion in a furnace 1 enters through an inlet 6 and is heated in pipes 4 before passing to the furnace through a duct5. The fuel supply is controlled by a valve 3 coupled to a speed governor 15, and may also be coupled to the inlet steam nozzles to the turbine, from the superheater 2. The shating for the pump 12, and feed-water compressor, may be driven by a mechanical or electrical coupling 13. The turbine drives a generator 14. The plant may be started up by generating steam in an auxiliary boiler (not shown). In a modification bleeding of steam from the turbine or engine may commence at a temperature considerably below the maximum operating temperature of the turbine or engine. Temperatures and pressures of the working fluid are referred to in the Provisional Specification.
