Abstract

Regulating.-In a steam power system comprising a main steam-engine and an auxiliary steamengine, the exhaust from which is used for heating the feed water, the steam supply to the auxiliary engine is automatically varied with the amount of the steam consumed by the main engine. A main turbine 5 discharges into a condenser 8, which has its condensate pump 14 and air pump 15 driven by an electromotor 17 and an auxiliary turbine 18, the exhaust from which is delivered by a port 21 to the feed-water heater. The turbine 18, which is connected to the motor 17 by reduction gearing 19, receives steam from the main turbine through a pipe 20, the supply to both turbines being controlled by the same valve 10, and the proportion of steam delivered to the auxiliary turbine and thereby rendered available for feed-heating purposes remains constant ; the electromotor 17 carrying a greater or less proportion of the load on the auxiliaries in accordance with the amount of steam delivered to the auxiliary turbine 18. Under certain cond.itions, the motor 17 operates as a generator. Where the main turbine is provided with overload inlets at intermediate stages, the conduit 20 is connected by a pipe 20<a> to the working passage of the main turbine at or below such stages. In a modification, high-pressure steam is supplied to the auxiliary turbine through a. valve controlled by the pressure at a point in the main turbine where such pressure is a measure of the total amount of steam passing through the main turbine.
