Abstract
595,668. Motor power plant. FAIRWEATHER, H. G. C. (Werkspoor N. V.). Feb. 5, 1942, No. 1549. [Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] The exhaust from one or more reciprocating steam engines driving a ship's propellers is led partly into one or more turbines and partly into a condenser through a throttle valve controlled by the speed governor of the turbine or turbines. The latter exclusively drive the auxiliaries of the plant, such as feed and other pumps and electric generators. In the arrangement shown, steam from a boiler is supplied to a reciprocating engine 4 through a pipe 2 and is exhausted partly through a preheater 18 to a condenser 6 and partly to a turbine 8. The proportion of steam thus byepassing the turbine is determined by a valve 10 controlled by the speed governor of the turbine which also controls a valve 13 governing admission to the turbine of live steam direct from the boiler. The turbine exhausts into a condenser 27, the condensate from which is forced by a pump 15<1> into the main condenser 6. The condensate from the latter is forced by pump 15 through the preheater 18 and a second preheater 19 to a feedwater reservoir 20. Steam withdrawn from the low-pressure cylinder of engine 4 towards the end of the stroke is passed through pipe 21 to the preheater 19 for heating purposes, and the resultant condensate is passed to the reservoir 20. The feedwater in the latter is further heated by condensate from boiler steam supplied by an ejector 22, and is finally forced by pump 14 back to the boiler through one or more preheaters 24. The latter receives heating steam from the receivers of engine 4 through pipe 25, the resultant condensate being passed to the reservoir 20. The feed pump 14 is driven by the turbine, in common with a cooling water pump 16, electric generator 17 and feed pumps 15, 15<1>. The condenser 27 may be omitted. More than one reciprocating engine and turbine may he used.
