Abstract

905,664. Gas turbine plant. DE HAVILLAND ENGINE CO. Ltd. Nov. 3, 1960 [Nov. 3, 1959; March 7, 1960], Nos. 37321/59 and 37782/60. Divided out of 905,663. Class 110 (3). A power plant includes a combustion chamber and a turbine using the combustion gas as working fluid, the combustion gas or air being heated before admission to the turbine in a heater which is heated by means of an electric generator, the energy supplied to the generator being derived from the heat in the exhaust gases from the turbine. In Fig. 1 combustion gases are generated in an auxiliary gas turbine set comprising an air compressor 13, combustion chamber 36 and turbine 12, the turbine driving the compressor. The gases discharging from the turbine 12 are then re-heated in a heater 14 by means of an electric resistance element 25, and then pass to a second combustion chamber 15 where they are further heated by burning fuel therein. The combustion gases then enter the main turbine 11 which is indicated as driving a ship's propeller. The exhaust gases then pass to a steam generator 17, the steam generated passing through line 18 to the steam turbine 21 which drives an electric generator 24, current from which flows to the resistance element 25. The steam is withdrawn from the turbine 21 by means of an extraction pump 22 and passed to a condenser 23. The steam generator is supplied by means of a feed pump 19. An astern turbine 26 is mounted on the same shaft as the turbine 11 and gas is supplied to either turbine by operation of the valves 27. Air from the compressor 13 of the gas generating set may be preheated in a heater 31 having an electric heating element supplied from the generator 24. In Fig. 2, the gas generating set again comprises a compressor 13, combustion chamber 36 and turbine 12, the gases passing from the turbine 12 to the main turbine 11 with no reheating therebetween, but in this case two stages of preheating are provided upstream of the combustion chamber 36. The exhaust gases from the turbine 11 pass through a first stage air preheater 33, the gases then passing to the steam generator 17, the steam generated passing to a steam turbine 21 driving an electric generator 24 as in the first embodiment. Current from the generator 24 is fed to the electric resistance element 31 in the second stage air preheater 14. In a further embodiment, current for the electric resistance element is generated in a thermopile which instead of being driven by an engine generates electric power directly from the heat in the exhaust gases from the turbine. The combustion gases may alternatively be generated in a free piston gas generator instead of in the compressor-turbine set.
