[Class 110 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a hot air or gas power plant in which a gaseous operating medium is heated at constant volume by heat exchange and expanded in a power engine or turbine, the operating medium is mechanically compressed before admission to the constant-volume heating chamber and the resulting pressure increase is converted wholly or partly into work at a suitable point in the plant. In the plant shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, the medium d is supplied intermittently by a compressor G to the constant-volume chamber B of a heat exchanger and thence to an intermittent-flow turbine E and a continuous-flow turbine F<1>. A part d<1> of the exhaust from the turbine E is conveyed to a combustion chamber A, in which it supports the combustion of fuel b, the hot products passing through the jacket of the heat exchanger and afterwards driving a turbine F<2>. In a modification, Fig. 2, a part d<1> of the exhaust from the turbine E is conveyed to the combustion chamber A and thence through a jacket on the heat exchanger to a mixing chamber H, while the remainder of the exhaust from the turbine is conveyed directly to the mixing chamber H. The gases are thence conveyed to the turbine F and exhausted through a second jacket on the heat exchanger. In another modification, the whole of the operating medium passes through both turbines and part of the exhaust is then used in the combustion chamber A. The two turbines may be mounted on a single shaft driving the compressor G and an electric generator ; or these turbines may drive separate generators supplying the same main, the second turbine also driving the compressor G.
