Abstract

481,097. Power plant. KARRER, W. July 1, 1936, No. 18260. Convention date, July 1, 1935. [Classes 110 (iii) and 122 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] A gaseous operating medium M1 such as air, gas, superheated steam, or a mixture thereof, admitted intermittently into a closed chamber R1, is heated at substantially constant volume by heat exchange to increase the pressure, is discharged into an engine or turbine KM1 in which it performs work, and the exhaust is used for heating in a constantvolume chamber R2 a further operating medium M2 for performing work in a further engine or turbine KM2. In the plant shown diagrammatically, the chamber R1 is enclosed in a jacket Wap1 through which combustion products VG are conveyed from a combustion chamber O supplied with fuel B and air VL for combustion. The air may be supplied in excess of that required for complete combustion. The combustion products leaving the jacket Wap1 may be conveyed to the jacket of a further heat exchanger R<x>1 in which is similarly heated a medium M<x>1 supplied to an engine or turbine KM<x>1, and the products are finally discharged into the atmosphere or into an engine or turbine GKM. The exhaust gases from the engines KM1, KM<x>1 &c. are discharged through jackets Wap2 &c., each enclosing a further chamber R2, R<x>2, &c. in which is similarly heated a medium M2 &c. supplied to a further engine or turbine KM2 &c. the medium M1 &c. from the jackets R2 &c. being discharged into the atmosphere or returned to the inlets of the chambers R1 &c. In modifications, in which the medium heated in the chamber R2 is air, the exhaust from the engine or turbine KM1 or KM2 is used as combustion air in the combustion chamber O and the gases VG from the heat exchanger Wap1 may be conveyed directly to an engine or turbine GKM. The media M1, M2, &c. used in different parts of the plant may be the same or different fluids, and may give up part of their heat for cooking, heating, steam boiler operation or other purposes. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also modifications in which (a) the exhaust from the first turbine is used partly as combustion air in the chamber O and partly to heat a boiler supplying a steam engine; and (b) the exhaust from the first turbine is used as combustion air partly in the chamber O and partly as in a second combustion chamber, the products from which heat a boiler supplying a steam engine. The Specification also comprises a drawing showing a plant in which two groups of heating chambers each comprise four chambers in series. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
