Abstract

513,459. Elastic-fluid turbines. BECHARD, E. April 19, 1938. No. 11829. Convention date, April 16, 1937. [Class 110(iii)] [Also in Group XIII] In a heat engine comprising a turbine 4 and a rotary boiler mounted on a common shaft 1, the working fluid is admitted to the boiler through the shaft and during vaporisation flows first centrifugally and then centripetally through dish-shaped chambers 5, 6. Hot gases supplied by burners 9 are caused to sweep the chambers by baffle plates 11. Adjustable fuel and air-inlet ports are provided in the casing 10 and baflles 11. In a modification, the chambers 5, 6 are replaced by nests of tubes having the same external contour. In one construction, shown in the upper half of Fig. 4, the tubes 12, 14 radiate from a drum 7 to a manifold 13 and in another construction shown in the lower-half of Fig. 4, U-tubes are used. Any of these constructions may be combined in one boiler. The casing 10 may be made rotatable to bring the combustion gases into contact with the tubes or chambers. A piston device for starting the engine under load, may be incorporated. The working fluid may be water or mercury. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of a cylindrical or conical boiler, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), in which the combustion gases circulate either over the surface of the generator as shown in the upper half of Fig. 6 (Cancelled), or through passage b between the generator and a crown 18 attached to the generator by tubes 19, as shown in the lower half of Fig. 6 (Cancelled). In another modification the gases circulate in tubes, parallel or inclined to the shaft passing through the boiler. In a further modification, the turbine 4 is replaced by a piston machine. The engine may also be used as a condenser or cooler by causing the gases to be cooled to circulate inside, and the cooling fluid outside, the boiler. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
