Abstract
642,257. Hot-gas engines. SHELL REFINING & MARKETING CO., Ltd.. RIGBY, R., BOWEN, I. G., and TIPLER, W. Dec. 4, 1947. No. 32089. [Class 7(i)] [Also in Group XII] The flame tube of a combustion chamber for a hot gas reciprocating engine is constructed of metal from a series of similar overlapping sections 2 spaced apart from each other so as to provide a series of fine air passages through which air can flow from the outer space the air passages overlapping one another over the major portion of their lengths measured in the direction of the airflow therethrough and being so dimensioned that the flow of air through the passages is laminar. Combustion air enters the duct 12 after being pre-heated by the exhaust gases. The burner 9 is surrounded by swirl vanes 4 through which the primary air enters the flame tube. The combustion products and diluent air pass into the heating element 22 to transfer heat to the working cylinder 14 of the engine. Dimensions for the sections 2 are given in the Specification.
