Abstract

616,006. Air heaters. SEGRAVE, C. R., WILLIAMS, T. B. GLYNNE-, and BARKER, H. H. Aug. 8, 1946, No. 23484. [Classes 64(i) and 64(iii)] An air heater for aircraft comprises a combustion chamber 1 for oil or gas surrounded by an outer chamber 9 spaced from the combustion chamber, both chambers being mounted in a casing 17 through which air flows while burning gases are caused to pass through the combustion chamber and through the outer chamber 9. A burner head 4 contains a sparking plug 5 and fuel-injecting jets 21 and communicates with the combustion chamber through ports 7. The hot gases leave the chamber 1 through radial ducts 10 and after passing through the annular chamber 9 enter an exhaust flue 11. A further outer chamber 13 surrounds the chamber 9 and carries the exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine which operates both a fan for blowing air through the apparatus and a fuel-pump. The outermost chamber 13 also discharges into the flue 11. The chambers 1, 9, and 13 are spaced apart from one another to allow the maximum heat transference. A flue 18, normally closed by a hinged flap 22, acts as a safety valve if the pressure in the combustion chamber is excessive.
