Abstract
1,112,131. Gas turbine combustion chambers; gas turbine engines. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Aug. 19, 1966 [Aug.19, 1965], No.35576/65. Headings F1G and F1L. Combustion apparatus for a gas turbine engine comprises an annular flame tube 10, 11 with its outlet 16 at the same end as the inlet 14 of the air jacket 12, 13, fuel nozzles 23 being provided at the other end. Dilution air holes 18 and primary and secondary combustion air holes 19 are provided in the outer wall 11 of the flame tube, and further dilution air holes 24 are provided in the inner wall 10. Two rows of small closely spaced holes 20 are provided, one row being between the primary and secondary air holes 19 and the other row being between the primary air holes 19 and the closed end of the flame tube. The air entering the flame tube through the holes 20 forms a substantially continuous air barrier which breaks up the flow pattern within the flame tube into a pair of toroids 21, 22. Air is supplied to the combustion apparatus by a centrifugal compressor 15, and the combustion gases are supplied to a turbine 17 having an exhaust passage 25 bounded by the inner wall 12 of the air jacket.
