Abstract

574,537. Supplying liquid fuel. BEINLICH, F. June 29, 1944, No. 12410. [Class 7 (iii)] Liquid fuel is heated by exhaust in a coil 46 and it flows past a manually operated valve 45 and a further coil 47 the pressure and temperature being such that it is spontaneously ignited on admission to the compressed air charge in the engine combustion chamber. The fuel is supplied to a pipe 44 from a supply tank by a pump having a byepass and pressure valve which maintains the pressure at about 1000 lbs. per square inch. The supply to a V8 engine is shown in which the chamber 7 surrounding the heating coils, through which .exhaust flows, is arranged between the rows of cylinders. Fuel gas passes from the coil 47 and manifolds 43 to pipes 25, leading to the engine cylinders. Engine operated valves 23, Fig. 3, admit the fuel at the end of the compression stroke to nozzles 9 having openings 10. Exhaust flows past valves 13 and jackets 40, 41 surrounding the valves 23 and pipes 25 to the chamber 7 and escapes past a valve 51' controlled simultaneously with valves 66 in the air inlet pipes to the engine. At starting, both these valves are substantially closed and fuel is supplied to a burner 54. A switch closes the circuit to an igniter 55 and glow plugs 39 in the combustion chambers. A thermally operated switch breaks the circuit when the engine is hot enough for normal working.
