Abstract

584,477. Generating combustion products under pressure. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and CLARKE, J. S. Dec. 13, 1944, No. 25023. [Class 51 (i)] In apparatus for generating a stream of hot gases for delivery to a turbine, &c., of the kind in which a combustion chamber a delivers into a co-axial mixing chamber composed of a series of truncated conical members f<1> and surrounded by a jacket h, the latter being substantially closed at its forward end and serving for the supply of diluent air, the members f<1> are connected to each other and to the combustion chamber by junction pieces f<2> having apertures f<3> for the passage of the diluent air. The combustion chamber is fired by a liquid fuel burner c surrounded by fixed air-directing vanes d, further supplies of air being delivered through apertures b<1> in the end cover b and the baffle plate e and through openings m providing communication between the combustion chamber and the jacket h. The latter is fitted at its forward end with a closing ring l having grooves j through which a limited quantity of air can escape for cooling purposes, the ring l also forming part of an expansion joint between the adjacent ends of the outer casing g and the hot gas delivery nozzle k.
