A thermal power plant for the generation of electricity comprises a steam turbine plant in which an electrical generator 1 is driven by at least one high pressure steam turbine 2, the turbine exhausting to at least one low pressure turbine 3 mounted on a separate shaft, the low pressure turbine driving at least one gas compressor 4 supplying gas through means 5 for heating the gas and thence to at least one gas turbine 6 which is connected to the shaft of the high pressure steam turbine. Gas leaving the gas turbine may pass to a boiler for heating water to raise steam for supply to the steam turbine plant. An auxiliary gas turbine plant may be provided which is mechanically separated from the remainder of the plant and comprises at least one auxiliary gas turbine driving at least one auxiliary compressor, the auxiliary compressor receiving gas from the compressor driven by the low pressure turbine and supplying it via means for heating the gas to the auxiliary gas turbine. Exhaust from the auxiliary turbine may pass to the gas turbine coupled to the generator shaft. The means for heating the gas passing from the auxiliary compressor to the auxiliary turbine may comprise heat exchanger means within a boiler supplying steam to the steam turbine plant. Liquified natural gas may be used to cool the generator and then in its gaseous form may be burned in a combustion chamber the combustion products of which are used to drive the gas turbine or turbines. A set of turbines in series can be used for both steam and gas cycles.
