A method of operating a thermal power plant with a combined gas and steam turbine cycle comprises the steps of employing the exhaust gases of the gas turbine as a heating medium in a steam generator supplying steam to the steam turbine, raising the temperature of the exhaust gases by burning a quantity of supplementary fuel such that the steam generator produces steam at substantially the maximum temperature acceptable to the steam turbine and maintaining the temperature differences between the heating medium and the feedwater or steam in the steam generator so as to provide therein the most efficient heat transfer.
