Abstract

283,491. Bauer, G. Jan. 11, 1927, [Convention date]. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.-In ships having multiple propellers driven by a mixed plant of reciprocating steam engines and turbines, one or more shafts are driven direct by reciprocating engines and through gearing by exhaust turbines and the remaining shaft or shafts by live steam turbines with or without the assistance of one or more high pressure turbines arranged in series or parallel. The shaft 6 is driven by a live steam turbine 5 and the shafts 3, 4 are driven by reciprocating engines 1, 2 and by turbines 7, 8 through gearing 11, 13, and 12, 14, respectively, hydraulic couplings 9, 10 being interposed . Live steam is supplied to the turbine 5 and engines 1, 2 through valves 15, 16 and their exhaust passes to the turbines 7, 8 through valves 18, 19, supplementary connections thereon for supplying steam to the intermediate or low pressure stages of turbine 5 being fitted. The shaft 6 may also be driven by a high pressure turbine through gearing.
