D r i v i n g arrangements.-In a steam power plant comprising a number of units in series for driving a single shaft, such as a propeller shaft f, a high-speed, high-pressure engine b is arranged in front of or added to the main reciprocating engine a, and an exhaust turbine c is arranged behind it. The high-pressure engine b may be a floating-piston reciprocating engine or a turbine. The engines b, c are connected to the main shaft f and gearing d, e, and they may be uncoupled when necessary, the auxiliaries being put out of action. Valves g, h, i are provided so that the main engine a may be fed with an extra or separate supply of steam, and its exhaust may be bye-passed to the condenser k. The high-pressure and exhaust engines b, c may be duplicated.
