Reciprocating machines .-A free piston engine 1 is used to generate products of combustion under pressure which are expanded in a turbine 3. The engine drives a reciprocating electric generator 8 the current from which may be used to drive auxiliaries or may be used direct with a generator 4 driven by the turbine to keep the engine moving uniformly.
