Systems depending on the use of two or more machines; central station plant, arrangements of. -An electric generator with a reciprocating armature driven by a " free-piston " engine is connected to a rotary motor generator which drives a flywheel, or is sufficiently massive to serve as a flywheel and controls the period and voltage curve of the reciprocating generator, Current or an external circuit being taken off the circuit of the two generators. The armature 10 is connected by rods 5, 6 to pistons 1, 2 moving in cylinders 3, 4 and reciprocates inside field magnet 15. Current is taken from this generator by leads 20, 21 connected to an external circuit and also to a motor generator 25 coupled to a flywheel. The generator 25 may be of multipolar construction, so that the periodicity of the current produced is greater than that of the freepiston device. The plant is in some cases so designed that the energy transferred back and forth between the two generators is considerably greater than that supplied to the external circuit. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, the exhaust from the cylinders 3, 4 drives a turbine 32 which is coupled to the motor-generator 36 connected to the reciprocating generator as before and the current for the external circuit is supplied by a generator 34 coupled to the turbine 32 and motor generator 36.
